Hip Hop for Hunger Summary

If you're just visiting you might notice that "Feb 27" is in the page title of this blog, so the event came yesterday and it was great. I've been hearing positive things about it today at school and I'm glad it turned out good. We had great performers coming, plus I got to bust a rap, and the turnout ended up being just right for the size of the room we were in. We didn't end up finding a stage but it worked out because the dance and step team had a lot of room. Sound and lights were good and the overall feel of the event was fresh, like when it's 100 degrees outside and you jump into cold water, But the main point is that we made a difference.

So first it was DJ Jesus's dj routine, me (Survei), and the RHS Step Team (who made a step special for the event), then Notion rapped, enunciating the heart out of the words as he does and one of the songs was rapped to a famous beat/instrumental ballad. Members of the Quadian dance team pretended to be his quartet, singing with the beat, which was hilarious. Then the dance team performed and they were amazing, then Braille and Theory Hazit came on (it was a great lineup).My friend DJ Jesus was running music for Braille and Theory Hazit, so it was cool how the performers intermingled. At the end of "Hip Hop for Hunger", Braille talked about hunger and noted that the word "Hip Hop" was falling off a sign that said "A Hip Hop concert for Hunger in Africa," he made the point that this event wasn't so much for Hip Hop as it was for hunger.

Looking back, the event was the right mix of edginess, art, and fun and I think that the music left a good taste in the attenders' mouth. While this event is over, it's sort of a beginning for me. My next goal is getting 4 instrumentals so that I can do a whole set of songs. While this was just one event, it might lead to other people doing events too; I mean, this concert was inspired by previous concerts at Rogers such as the "Tree Hit Me In The Face Tour". All that's left is some paperwork, and the school will be mailing the check to WorldVision.

Thanks for visiting! I made this website as a way to promote a single Hip Hop event at my school, and this benefit concert is happening on February 27th at Rogers High School in Puyallup, WA at 7pm. I'm hoping to make a difference with this event, and I'm hoping that a lot of people in my area will be able to come, but if you're not going to be able to, there's a link in the upper right corner of this blog if you want to donate directly to a charity.

Blogs of Note is a listing that is very hard to get on and I'm so excited that I got on there! I never thought that this would happen. I guess I should say "hi" to all the people visiting this page. This Hip Hop Hunger blog is really just an example of me using the Blogger system to create a webpage though I did spend quite a bit of time on it!

I'm a 17-year-old 12th-grader in high school who is currently pursuing a career in rapping. About a month ago I performed a written rap on stage for the first time and I was hooked! Well now I'm going to be performing at this Hip Hop Hunger event and I'm stepping it up to two songs! What about Hip Hop draws you to it?

I listened to all types of music when I was growing up (and I still do) but I think what grabbed me about hiphop was the lyrics. the lyrics didn't hold anything back. It expressed raw emotion, life stories and put it in a language that I could understand.

How did you end up being the opening act for James Brown?

James Browns management company heard some of my music online and we built a relationship. I never expected to be opening shows for Mr. Brown, but it all came together and I did 20 shows with him. It was an incredible learning and growing experience for me. I'm confident that God put me in that situation for a purpose and it will always be a part of my life that I value.

Why perform at an event that you might not make a profit from?

I didn't start rapping just to make money. I rapped for 8 years or so before I made any money at all. I've always been motivated by love first of all. If we can raise some money for people who need food.... that's an act of love. Sometimes it's hard to care about people that we've never met, but the reality is that children are starving in different parts of the world. Our contributions do make a difference in their lives.

How did you get into doing Hip Hop music?

Well, as far as I can remember, at least some aspect of making music has always appealed to me. Simultaneously, I heard hip hop and fell in love with the music of it and began writing poetry and sensing an intense enjoyment and perhaps some talent. As I grew older, the merging of these was natural. There wasn't any defining moment I don't think, but a natural progression of what interested me, what I was passionate about, and the abilities i was given.

What's the main reason why you are coming to perform this event?

Any chance to perform, regardless of the situation, is one I cherish and look forward to. Rapping on stage is probably my favorite thing to do. The fact that this event has the chance to effect positive change outside of the music makes it that much more meaningful and exciting. I love to perform music, that's the main reason, but I love the idea of being a part of something as cool and potentially effective as this event and I'm happy to support in any way possible.

Is there some advice you'd like to share with those aspiring to be rappers?

Well, I hesitate to consider myself worthy of dispensing advice in this regard but: My primary advice would be to be yourself. Obviously this is about as cliche as an answer can get but it's a cliche for a reason. Every human being is different in SOME way - a great challenge as an artist is to capture that difference in your music or art in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and excellent. Of course, I'm still learning. However, I think hip hop, and music in general, would benefit and evolve and diversify if every aspiring rapper attempted to bring their uniqueness to the table, rather than their sameness. Of course, easier said than done. Advice #2 would be to practice.

How would you describe your style(s) of rapping?
I agree with Kirk Franklin. We are artists who love God. I rap my testimonies and responsibilities over 1999-style hip hop beats.

I remember seeing a picture of you playing the trombone, so besides emceeing, what other musical talents/skills do you have?
I freestyle on the keyboard with my family... I often DJ at local venues. I also make beats. That's my 1st love in music. My family is musical. My wife is a singer/drummer/guitarist... and so are my kids.

Theory Hazit is a tight name. What is the story behind it and what does it mean?
My name is TheArthur, and in the neighborhoods/schools they called me Theo. One day, I added the "R Y" to my name. I have God's word in my heart. Theory Hazit. boom!

Quadian Dance Team

What makes the Quadian Dance Team unique is that they incorporate different styles of dance, but primarily Krump, Bboy, and Hip Hop in general, into their routines. The result is a mixture of smooth and explosive.

"We feel like we have something to show the world," said Javon a.k.a. Complex, "and we're trying to bring it in a positive way, so that people could appreciate it."

Quadian participates in many events and competitions and is a part of a hip hop club in downtown Tacoma, a place for teens and young adults.

The Cause

On some days it is my pleasure to ask, "what should I eat?" but imagine what it is like for those whose question is

"Will I eat?"

Hunger is something that we all have experienced in our lives on a very small level, but it is difficult and painful to imagine what real starvation feels like for those around the world. Hunger has a damaging effects and it even takes lives.

The stats of starvation are horrible, but we have the power to make a big impact.

Hip Hop artists, fans, and those who simply want to help are coming together on February 27 to raise money to combat hunger in Africa, we all can make a difference. They need our help and with your help we can change lives, maybe even save some.
